Indian Pangolin
Pangolins are the only mammals with a scale like structure made of keratin (same as our fingernails). They are also an example convergent evolution meaning two or more animals have adapted in similar ways in different places as they are not related to anteaters or armadillos. They are found mainly in South Africa and Southeast Asia into India. Similar to some armadillos they curl into a ball when threaten using their scales for protection. Their scales are unique and are the reason why they are so sought after by people. Some use their scales as a ground up powder for medicine. They are the most trafficked animal in the world and are at great risk of extinction. |
